Chiefmaster John Ward - BIO
CM John Ward, pictured left, came to study martial arts much later than most career martial arts instructors; not until after his young son took it up as a hobby. And his first taste came from Master Phillip Hinchliffe of Kuk Sool Won®. But he also recieved a great deal of valuable instruction whilst a member of the World Kuk·Sool Association, from esteemed Senior Master David Williams, now a resident in Calgary, Canada. However, throughout his martial arts journey he has also been taught by other notable masters, such as John Ives and John Watson (yes, yes, more “Johns” than you can shake a stick at). He has also received guided attention from WKSA founder, In-Hyuk Suh, as well as his sons, Alex Suh and Sung-Jin Su, from attending many seminars throughout his years with that organisation. It should be noted that John Ward’s current Instructor is 9th DAN, Rudy Timmerman, the founder of NKMAA. CM Ward has travelled extensively to improve his martial arts knowledge, visiting Europe, USA, Canada and South Korea.
John Ward consecutively won the UK Senior Grand Champion award at the UK WKSA Tournaments, in 1999, 2000 & 2001. And in 1999 he was also a gold medalist in the WKSA World Championships held in Houston, Texas, USA, not to mention later achieving three other medal standings: second, third and fourth place in the 3rd DAN Category at the 50th Anniversary competition in nearby Katy, Texas. He has also competed sucessfully in many “open” tournaments (i.e. those open to all styles of martial arts) and has won a number of first, second, and third place awards, often against much younger opposition. In 2009 he was a National All styles UK Champion and as recently as October 2019, at the age of 64, he brought home Silver and Bronze medals in a national tournament in Peterborough, where his competitors’ ages ranged from 18 through 40-something, with CM Ward being by far, the oldest.
John Ward has been teaching Korean Martial Arts since 1999 and has been located in Morecambe since June 2003 (Morecambe Martial Arts & Junior Leadership Academy). Since then over 50 Morecambe students have reached the coveted rank of 1st DAN Black Belt and one, Angela Prince, now a partner and Master Instructor in his school, has attained her 6th DAN. The Morecambe school now has several more students who are approaching black belt testing and a few who are in the process of testing for 2nd DAN and above. CM Ward currently holds the rank of 7th DAN in Kuk Sool Hapkido, 5th DAN in the tough art of Kong Shin Bup and 4th DAN in Kuk Sool Won.
